Soon after completing medical college, Owen enlisted in the National Guard in his home state, Alaska. He participated in numerous search and rescue missions for missing tourists and travelers, dealt with the aftermath of disasters, and took part in military operations against smugglers and various militants. He found the military service much more appealing than his primary job at a regular clinic in his remote hometown, where he worked as a nurse.

As soon as the opportunity presented itself, he resigned from his civilian job to focus on Arctic research. Subsequently, his contract with the National Guard expired, and Owen chose not to renew it. Instead, he dedicated all his time to working as a polar medic. By then, he had become a highly sought-after specialist, and many experienced polar explorers dreamed of having him on their team. He conquered the North Pole twice and participated in dozens of humanitarian and research missions in northern latitudes.

During one of these missions, he traveled to a small town in Greenland that had recently been attacked by armed bandits. There were many casualties, and urgent professional assistance was needed on-site. It was there that he met Magnus Petersen. Despite Owen being an outsider and having little knowledge of Greenland, Magnus invited him to join his unit, "Saturn". He needed a seasoned operative, especially one with combat experience.
